Lesson 4 – Topic 5: Planning for Safety: Contractor Management

The following list may be considered when planning to or engaging third parties. This list is not exhaustive and organizations should review and amend these as necessary to ensure relevance to their own workplace.

In this approach, contractor management is divided into 3 steps.

Contractor selection

Insurances
Public liability plus Workers compensation or Personal accident insurance

Licenses, High Risk Work, Tickets, Qualifications, Experience
Determine what licences, tickets and qualifications are required for the work.  Also consider work experience and references

Hazardous Chemicals
Current Safety Data Sheets for all hazardous chemicals brought to site.

Safe Work Method Statements (SWMS)
Safe work procedures for the tasks to be undertaken including the use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Safety Policy and Plan
The provision of a safety policy and plan that clearly set out how safety will be managed.

Contractor or visitor engagement

Signing In / Out
Signing in & out in the Contractor / Visitor register on each entry and exit.  Issue contractor badge.

Site Induction for Contractors and Visitors
Site safety policies and procedures to be adhered to at all times.

Review Hazardous Chemicals, SWMS, Safety Plan
Review of documentation as per section 1, plus review work methods, safety precautions.

Permit to Work (PTW)
For activities that carry a high safety risk, a PTW may be appropriate.

Supervision
Implement regular supervision and checks to ensure safety precautions stay in place.

Contract completion

Signing In / Out
Signing in & out in the Contractor / Visitor register on each entry and exit.

Inspect Work Area
Area left in a clean and safe state.

Permit to Work (PTW)
Sign off PTW on satisfactory job completion.
