The Leading Course in Crystalline Silica Exposure Prevention

Leading Safety Training’s course is comprehensive in its scope. Our team are determined to improve the awareness about silica and best practices when it comes to keeping workers safe. Our course is relevant and engaging for both workers and PCBUs, to ensure everyone leaves with a better understanding of how to manage these worksite risks. The course will include relevant case studies and practical onsite training exercises. The general course outline is as follows:

Importance Of Silica Exposure Prevention

Silica is short for silicon dioxide, which is a naturally occurring and widely abundant mineral that forms the major component of most rocks and soils. Silicon dioxide comes in both crystalline and non-crystalline forms of silicon dioxide. The most abundantly found type of crystalline silica in Australia is quartz. Different rocks and rock products will contain varying amounts of silica.

Crystalline silica can be found in sand, stone, concrete and mortar, all common construction materials. It is also used to make a variety of products, including composite stone used to produce kitchen and bathroom benchtops, as well as tiles, bricks, and some plastics. Workers that cut, drill, polish, grind, crush, or saw materials that contain silica, will generate dust particles that cause serious harm.

The dust particles generated by these actions cause harm when they are inhaled by workers or bystanders. Prolonged exposure to the dust leads to many severe health conditions, including silicosis.
